Friday 11th January - walk **** – Rendlesham Forest UFO Trail - mainly
cloudy.
After a fantastic couple of day’s visit from our son Rob with the
wonderful Arlo the house seems quiet now they have gone home. So, it was a
good opportunity to head over to Suffolk Sails to pick up my repaired
windsurfing sail:) Nice morning at home before heading over to Woodbridge
at 1 o’clock. With the sail collected we then looked for somewhere to
walk and ended up at the Forestry Commissions Rendlesham Forest, parking up
at the free car park at the end of the old Woodbridge Airfield runway. This
area is famous for a series of UFO sightings in the 1980’s (the story of
which earned Rob a Blue Peter Badge!!!) and a 3-mile walk has been signed
through the pine woods. There was not a animal, bird or UFO in sight as we
headed into the dark forest with its tight rows of pine trees but then the
silence was broken as three deer thundered across the path right in front
of us:) The easy to follow signs lead you around the forest squares on nice
wide footpaths which can also be used for cycling. Perhaps we will bring
our bikes in the future. As the walk progressed the silence was broken by
barking dogs and we came across several vans, campervans, tents and
caravans parked up in the middle of the forest. We soon got talking to a
man from Stowmarket who was setting up his tether line for his 6 huskies
who were all keen to get out of the van. We discovered that a round of the
British Siberian Husky Racing Association are running an event over the
weekend. They run time trials over 2 to 4 miles long from 6 dog wheeled
sledges to single dogs pulling scooters and mountain bikes. It would be
great to go back and watch but it is looking good this weekend for some
windsurfing:) As we carried on, we spotted a bit more wildlife including
several grey squirrels and a spotted woodpecker. As we approach the end of
our walk near the airfield there are several noisy army helicopters
overhead. A nice walk covering 3 miles and out for one and a half
hours:)
